What is Lap Band?

A ‘lap band’ is an adjustable silicone belt type band placed around the top portion of the stomach. In lap band surgery, the band is placed by parting the stomach into two, where the upper stomach will form a pouch connected to the lower stomach through a narrow channel. Unlike gastric bypass where a portion is removed, banding is a temporary procedure, which doesn’t require much lifestyle changes. Here you can know how it can ideally curb body fat and belly fat.

During the lap band procedure, a bag-full of fluid is also placed around stomach, which helps reduce its size and limit the intake of food. This breakthrough procedure is now considered to be the least invasive among various types of bariatric procedures. In fact, lap band is a much simpler surgery than bypass. In gastric bypass, the surgeon tries to create a bypass around the stomach and also a part of the intestine, which makes it more complicated.

SILS

The latest advancement in lap band surgery is SILS (Single Incision Lap-Band Surgery). In this method, instead of making 5 small incisions as in case of the standard laparoscopic surgeries, there is only one incision made through the umbilicus for gastric access. The patient needs to suffer only lesser pain and there is also little to no scarring left after the procedure. The recovery period is also much lesser in lap band as there is no need to cut through the stomach muscles. It can also ensure excellent cosmetic results.
