Moving into a new house can be very exciting. There are so many things to do and new things to see, but you only need to make sure that the house is perfectly suitable for you. Feeling comfortable in a house isn’t always easy, but you can make it your own by adding some finishing touches. Whether it’s adding some outdoor furniture to your garden or repainting the wall to suit your own personal tastes, here are just a few of the things that you should do after moving into your new home.
- Check everything thoroughly
Whether you’ve bought a house or you’re just renting it for the time being, you should go around all the rooms and check to make sure there is nothing out of place. In rented properties, you might be given an inventory which must be returned within a few days of moving in. If you have been given this, make sure that you go around the house and make a note of anything which might need to be repaired. If you’ve bought the house, you need to ensure that there isn’t anything out of place which might require you to get some work done on the property. Sometimes, you may come across bad damage which you’ll need to take care of before you can truly start settling down in your new home.
- Make sure it is child-proof
You can ignore this step if you don’t have any children, but for those with little ones in tow, this step in essential. You should go around the property and into all the rooms which your child will be wandering into. Check that there are no sharp edges at your child’s height, or anything sharp or hot which might prove to cause an accident involving your children. Fires should have fireguards around them, and if your children are very young, get some gates for the bottom and top of the staircase too. Put anything valuable or dangerous on the top shelves of your cupboards, and don’t forget to warn your children too about any danger spots.
- Sort out utility bills
You’ve finally moved into your lovely new home, but you need to ensure that all your utility bills are set up or you might find yourself waking up without hot water one day. You can sort this out by contacting the necessary companies and letting them know that you have moved house. If you want to be extra prepared with this, start planning it even before you move into the property. You can get in touch with them as soon as you have your moving date and let them know that you are going to be moving into that particular property. By doing this, everything will be all ready and set up for you as soon as you arrive, and you can settle in without any extra problems and hassle.
- Redecorate if you’re not happy
Everybody won’t always agree on colors and styles in a house, so it’s important that you take the time to change anything that you’re not happy with if you’ve bought the house yourself. You might just want to ‘make do’ with what is already there, but remember that in a couple of months, you might be wishing you’d done something about it. If blue isn’t really your color or you don’t like those swirls on the wallpaper, take a week or two to redecorate the property and make it exactly how you like it. You’ll be so much happier living in a house which is exactly how you always imagined your new home to look like.
- Add finishing touches
Once you’ve checked through your home, made it safe for the kids and redecorated any rooms that you didn’t quite like, you can start to add the finishing touches. Buy new kitchenware if you want to make a fresh start or get something which matches the colors in there, and finish off your living room by using patterned cushions or family photographs. Add some furniture to the garden too, and don’t forget that hanging baskets and plants are a lovely touch during the warmer months. If you have children, give them some space in the garden too and make it fun for them by including garden toys.
