1. Take an interest in your school’s student government.
Many of the most successful politicians begin their political journey by running for class president or getting involved with their student government in some capacity. This will give you some experience when it comes to campaigning and trying to get people to vote for you. You will also need to learn how to debate your opponents. These are skills that every politician will need to learn at some point. You will need to have them if you have any hope of making a career for yourself in the political world.
2. Set your sights on going to a respected university.
Going to college is not a prerequisite for becoming a politician. However, the vast majority of people who are elected to very high offices have at least a bachelor’s degree. Therefore, you should work very hard in high school to get the best grades that you can. This will give you a good chance of being accepted into a university that has a very high ranking. Participating in extracurricular activities while you are in high school will also make you much more attractive to any university that you choose to apply to.
3. Consider going to law school after you graduate from college.
Politicians are referred to as lawmakers. This is because they write the bills that get voted on and turned into laws if they pass. This is why it should not surprise you to learn that many of the top politicians in the country have a law degree and a legal background. Again, this is not a prerequisite for being elected into a very high office. However, earning a law degree would definitely give you a solid advantage over those candidates who did not attend law school. Senator Mike Crapo went to law school. 4. Become a great public speaker.
Many people are very afraid of speaking in front of large groups of people. However, this is something that politicians need to do all the time. A politician is judged on many different things. One of these things is his or her ability to speak well. It might seem like an easy thing to do. However, many people freeze up when hundreds or thousands of people are listening to them speak. Knowing that a TV audience is watching can create an added level of fear for people when it comes to public speaking. Fortunately, there are various college classes you can take that will teach you to become a great public speaker.
